The U.S. Purchase of Alaska

Analysis Paragraph:
This political cartoon is about the U.S. Purchase of Alaska. You can identify that because William Seward is dragging this "iceberg" to the U.S. The cartoonist's message about the cartoon, is that Alaska is a big worthless chunk of ice, and the purchase was a mistake. This message is shown because in the cartoon Alaska looks like a piece of ice,and what most Americans at the time had referred it to Seward's Icebox or Seward's Folly . I can imagine a positive opinion from William Seward and how the purchase had benefited the U.S. with expansionism and materials (timber, oil). The cartoonist had used labeling. The cartoonist had shown what William Seward and another Russian gentleman are rolling once was Russian territory, but now is American territory.  The cartoonist is also using exaggeration to persuade the reader. The cartoonist is showing the two men dragging the wagon with the "iceberg." The cartoonist is using exaggeration again to persuade the reader. The cartoonist shows that Alaska is an "iceberg," like a worthless piece of ice. This cartoon supports my opinion on American Imperialism, because it is showing that the U.S. did not really need to add this piece of Alaska territory to the economy.
